Professor David Schwab Awarded Prestigious Sloan Research Fellowship

Professor David Schwab (Physics, Biology) was named a 2020 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in Physics, an award that honors early-career scientists and scholars in the United States and Canada.

The two-year fellowship, which provides $75,000 in funding, will be used to support Schwab’s research and his work with The Graduate Center’s Initiative for the Theoretical Sciences (ITS), which promotes collaboration and emphasizes theoretical approaches to the natural sciences.

“The Initiative for the Theoretical Sciences views science as a continuum and often produces work that cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries,” Schwab says. “This freedom from traditional discipline boundaries was indeed part of the appeal of joining The Graduate Center.”

A biological physicist, Schwab applies statistical physics and nonlinear dynamics to problems in biology. One of his current research interests is examining how learning emerges in both animate and human-made systems.
