Renaissance and Early Modern Travel and Research Grants

The Renaissance Studies Certificate Program offers a limited number of grants to help students at the CUNY Graduate Center travel to collections or conferences in connection with projects related to research in Renaissance and Early Modern studies. The award is supported by funds contributed by the Renaissance Society of America.

To be eligible, students must 1) be matriculated at level 2 or level 3 in a Ph.D. program at the CUNY Graduate Center at the time of application; 2) be working towards a Ph.D. in the Renaissance or Early Modern period (1350-1700); and 3) be registered in the Renaissance Studies Certificate Program. The project for which the grant is to be used must deal with a topic within the chronological period 1350-1700. Previous grant recipients are not eligible to apply.

Applications will be judged on the project's originality and its potential contribution to Renaissance or Early Modern scholarship. In the case of travel to collections, applications will be judged on the significance of the collection in relation to the research project and on the effective use of the collection. In the case of conferences, applications will be judged on the significance of the conference.

Students interested in applying must submit an online application with 1) a description of the research project (no more than 1000 words), including the current stage of the project; 2) a description of the collection to which the applicant is traveling, and how it will further his/her project (if the applicant is traveling to a collection), or a description of the conference (e.g., international, national, regional; interdisciplinary, Renaissance, all periods) and the panel in which the applicant will participate (if the applicant is traveling to a conference); 3) an itemized budget (including cost of transportation, lodging, and registration); 4) a curriculum vitae; 5) a letter of support from a GC faculty member who is working on this project with the applicant.

The deadline for submitting an application for the 2017-2018 Renaissance and Early Modern Travel and Research Grant will be announced soon.

Applications will be judged by a panel of three GC faculty members.

The amount of each grant will differ, depending on expenses. Funding of eligible applications is subject to each year's available budget.

Grant recipients will have to present original receipts for expenditures within thirty (30) days of being incurred. Upon presentation, grant amounts will be finalized and paid.
