The Future Looks Bleak for New York’s Unions

Crain’s New York, 7.9.18

New York is the most unionized state in the United States. Although private-sector unions represent far more of the workforce in New York than nationwide (17 percent compared with 6 percent), the real strength of organized labor here comes from the public sector, where a little less than 70 percent of employees belong to unions. That's twice the national percentage. (All New York numbers come from the indispensable State of the Unions report published each September by the Murphy Institute at The Graduate Center, CUNY.) In all, 1.9 million workers in the state belong to unions, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.
