Travel Advisory Policy

Updated August 27, 2021

All non-essential university-related international and domestic travel is suspended until further notice. Travel permission can be obtained during these times by submitting the Petition for Domestic or International Travel Form to Rachel Sponzo, for internal review, before submission to CUNY Central. After an internal determination if the plan is found acceptable, it will be forwarded to Central.
The following types of student travel are eligible to petition for a travel waiver: 1) to conduct research conducive to a dissertation or meeting other degree requirements; 2) present research, scholarly or creative works at national or international conferences; 3) to participate in one of the following federal scholarship/fellowship programs: Boren or Critical Languages Scholarship; or 4) to participate in a non-CUNY study abroad program that meets the standards applied to in-person study through the State Department’s Gilman Scholarship Program. Petitions should demonstrate an understanding of current CDC requirements and recommendations for domestic and international travel by vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, as applicable.
For full details on CUNY’s travel policy and related policy under COVID-19, please see the Academic Continuity Memo. The below information can be found on CUNY’s VaxUpCUNY website under Travel Guidance.
When planning international travel, students, employees and visitors should anticipate a 10 day period upon return when they will be subject to CUNY’s “building quarantine.”  Individuals should plan international travel to ensure that if they have class, work, or meetings scheduled during the 10 days after travel, that they can participate in these activities remotely, including authorization from their supervisor or instructor, as applicable.
This “building quarantine” is in addition to current guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for domestic and international travel.  The CDC continues to recommend that unvaccinated individuals who have not recovered from COVID-19 within the past three months should quarantine after domestic or international travel for ten days, or for seven days if they take a diagnostic COVID-19 test 3 to 5 days after travel and test negative.  Quarantines should follow the standards of the NYS Department of Health.
If you are quarantining, seek medical advice and isolate yourself from others.  If you have any health-related questions, please contact your health care provider. Students who need help connecting to a health care provider should contact CUNY Campus Health Services or call 3-1-1 for help finding a health care provider.
