In recent years Brazil has witnessed a growing alliance between reactionary movements and anti-gender offensives. The antagonism to LGBT and feminist policies has become a key element in the repertoire of Brazilian conservatism. Is the appeal to norms of gender and sexuality just a smokescreen to divert attention from the advancement of a neoliberal project or is it a fundamental element in the disputes over Brazilian democracy? To help answer these questions, this open class brings together experts from Brazil and the United States to discuss the place of gender and sexuality in recent Brazilian political history.
