University Center Schools
The CUNY University Center Schools are comprised of five schools and one program housed within the University Center:
The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism is the only publicly supported graduate journalism school in the Northeast. Opened in September 2006, the school offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, including a bilingual version with a unique Spanish-language concentration, as well as M.A. degrees in Entrepreneurial Journalism and Social Journalism. Students are taught by working reporters and editors in the media capital of the world, and a required paid summer internship gives them a head start when they're looking for jobs.
The School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) established in 2018 offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Labor Studies and Urban Studies; designed to meet the needs of working adults and traditional-age college students who seek to learn more about the challenges confronting poor and working class populations in the workplace and in the community. It also collaborates with other units of CUNY to offer a range of college-credit programs designed to give workers the academic and technical skills they need for professional advancement. In addition to its academic programs, SLU sponsors research; organizes forums and conferences; and publishes a national journal, New Labor Forum: A journal of ideas, analysis, and debate.
The CUNY Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy (CUNY SPH) is committed to providing a collaborative and accessible environment for excellence in education, research, and service, and to promoting equitable, efficient and evidence-based solutions to pressing health problems facing populations around the world. A vision for supporting both health and social justice invigorates our work in every domain.
The CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) is home to the first fully online degree programs at the City University of New York and provides online and on campus programs that meet the needs of adults looking for a seamless way to finish a bachelor’s degree, earn a master’s degree, or a certificate in a specialized field, advance in the workplace, or change careers. Affirming its role as a leader in online education, CUNY SPS was ranked in the top 5% in the Nation in U.S. News & World Report’s list of the 2019 Best Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs. Of the institutions ranked, CUNY SPS is #1 in New York City and #2 in New York State.
Macaulay Honors College provides an enhanced academic experience with extensive financial support to undergraduates who demonstrate exceptional academic merit and leadership potential. Macaulay’s mission is to inspire and prepare students to solve the challenges facing New York City, the nation, and the global community. Macaulay students, each based at one of eight of the CUNY system’s senior college campuses, amplify their classroom experiences through study abroad, internships, and research projects with CUNY faculty.
The CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies (CUNY BA) is a university-wide individualized undergraduate degree-granting program fostering interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary education and serving as an incubator for cutting-edge academic and professional pursuits in support of the GSUC’s priorities of innovation in curriculum, research, and pedagogy.
