A Message to the Campus About Today's Class of 2020 Tribute
I hope that you will join in today at 3 p.m. for The Graduate Center's video tribute to the class of 2020. The tribute will be broadcast live on YouTube.
Had things gone differently, we would be at Lincoln Center today honoring our graduates in person. Our tribute today is not a replacement for commencement — which will take place in 2021 when it is again safe to convene — but an interim celebration.
The remarks I offer our graduates were recorded when COVID-19 and its related health and economic crises were top of mind. Today, we are confronting additional crises related to racial justice. While I don’t address those issues directly in my talk to the class of 2020, I think you will hear in my remarks messages that can be applied to today’s troubling issues, and to others that may lie ahead.
Our graduates have already overcome so much. They are our best hope for the future.
Please join me in giving them your support as they move ahead, ready to fight for a safer and more just world.
