Today's Class of 2020 Tribute

GC Building Flags

June 2, 2020

Dear Graduate,

I hope that you will join in today at 3 p.m. as I and other colleagues from The Graduate Center pay tribute to you and to all of our 2020 graduates. The tribute will be broadcast live on YouTube at this link:

Had things gone differently, we would be at Lincoln Center today honoring you in person. Our tribute today is not a replacement for commencement — which will take place in 2021 when it is again safe to convene — but an interim celebration.

The remarks I offer were recorded when COVID-19 and its related health and economic crises were top of mind. Today, we are confronting additional crises related to racial justice. While I don't address those issues directly in my brief talk, I think you will hear in my remarks messages that can be applied to today’s troubling issues, and to others that may lie ahead.

You have come so far and are our best hope for the future.

Please join us as we honor you for making a difference through your achievements, your research, and your actions.

James Muyskens
Interim President
