Nursing Student Laura Penalo Named United Health Foundation Diverse Scholar
Ph.D. student Laura Penalo (Nursing) received a United Health Foundation (UHF) Diverse Scholars award, which provides $5,000 a year in tuition funding.
UHF Diverse Scholars also attend a yearly forum in Washington D.C. that offers networking opportunities, exposure to industry experts, and participation in think tanks that address critical problems in the nation’s health care system.
“The forum was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my professional life,” Penalo said. “As a Hispanic nurse, it was great to meet other minorities — African Americans, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders — and understand some of the issues that are affecting other populations. The experience was empowering and very inspirational.”
The GC’s Nursing Program is the only publicly funded nursing doctoral program in New York City.
