"New York City has long been ground zero for the nation's most serious health problems and the cradle for public health innovation. By using the City as our laboratory and its communities and institutions as our partners, our new Doctor of Public Health program educates researchers who can contribute to solving the world's most pressing health problems." |

The Doctoral Program in Public Health prepares students to lead public health agencies, programs, and initiatives; develop and evaluate intervention programs; plan and implement policies to improve the health of urban populations; lead research studies; and teach public health and related subjects in colleges and universities. It awards the Doctor of Public Health (DPH) degree and offers an interdisciplinary curriculum with a focus on urban health.
Areas of Study
The DPH offers four separate tracks. The Community, Society,
and Health track prepares students to conduct research
and develop and evaluate interventions to address social
determinants of health and improve community health. A
concentration in public health nutrition is also available
in this track. The Epidemiology track prepares students
to investigate and design and conduct intervention studies
on the determinants and distribution of health and disease
in populations. The Environmental and Occupational Health
track prepares students to develop research, programs,
and policies to assess and control exposures to community
and workplace hazards. Finally, the Health Policy and Management
track, which will accept its first class in Fall 2010,
prepares students to analyze public health and health care
policies and the organizational and financial management
of health-related institutions. Students in each track
are required to complete courses in urban health and interdisciplinary
research, a leadership development project, and a research
sequence that leads to a doctoral dissertation.
