"Presently, my research examines how urban minority children think about their experiences of racial discrimination and prejudice. Documenting how minority children and youth evaluate interracial exclusion will allow us to more fully understand the normative development of children of color."

The Ph.D. Program in Psychology prepares students for research, teaching, and practice in the various fields of psychology. While all doctoral degrees are awarded by the Graduate Center, the subprograms are based at different locations within CUNY. Application for admission should be made to a particular subprogram.

The field of psychology is quite complex, and the eleven subprograms in psychology reflect that complexity. Our attempt is to provide students with a broad understanding of the whole field, even as they specialize. We offer a view of psychology that studies: (1) the dimension from “inside to outside” – from the nervous system in humans and animals to their behavior in the world – and (2) the dimension from individual-centered to field-centered – from the individual and his/her nervous system to environmentally, socially, culturally, and ethologically grounded views.

Subprograms share interests and, in some cases, courses. Students are encouraged to take courses in other subprograms and in allied social and biological sciences. In this way, students are provided with broad-based and flexible training that prepares them to gain careers in the psychology of today, and also to meet the challenges of the psychology of tomorrow.
