Master's Programs
Journalism
The Master of Arts in Journalism at CUNY's Graduate School of Journalism is an intensive, three-semester program designed to train graduate students for a wide variety of careers in the field of journalism. This full-time program offers students a course of study that is both broad and deep, emphasizing the eternal verities of the journalistic profession while providing ample opportunities for specialization. In addition to the plentiful resources of New York City, the School itself boasts state-of-the-art media technology and a superb faculty composed of industry professionals and veteran journalists who have chosen to bring their expertise to the classroom. Students will have daily contact with working journalists, developing mentoring relationships and making the connections that will guide them both in and out of the classroom. Students will also participate in professional internships across the city, gaining hands-on experience.
MEDIA TRACKS
All students will be prepared for a professional career in the converged newsroom of the future, where they may be required to work in multiple media formats. They will also have the opportunity to specialize in a media format that most interests them. Beginning in the second semester, students will choose to pursue courses in either the print (newspaper and magazine), broadcast (radio and television), or interactive media track. Each track has a sequence of three courses that build upon one another. Students will have the freedom to substitute a course from another track if they wish.
SUBJECT MATTER CONCENTRATIONS
Students will choose a subject matter concentration, selecting from Arts/Culture, Urban Affairs, Business/Economics, and Health/Medicine. They will take three courses in their subject concentration that build upon one another. However, they will also have the flexibility to take a course that interests them in another concentration. The purpose is to develop an expertise in an area that could be pursued following graduation. Once students develop the skills required to be an analytic journalist in one specialty area, those skills can be applied to covering any specialty or beat area in the future.

Middle
Eastern Studies
The Master of Arts in Middle Eastern Studies offers an
interdisciplinary approach to graduate study on the Middle
Eastern region and its diaspora. Students enrolled in the
program gain a broad understanding of the history, politics,
economics, religions, and cultures of this critical region,
and develop special competence in their particular area
of interest. This is the first M.A. program in the country
to incorporate the study of the Middle Eastern diaspora
in its curriculum, encouraging new ways of thinking about
the adaptation of Middle Eastern immigrant communities
in the Americas and Europe. The program is geared to those
interested in academic careers as well as those pursuing
terminal M.A. degrees in preparation for careers outside
the academy such as public policy, journalism, social work,
international relations, economic development, immigrant
advocacy, education, or translation/interpretation. Students
will have access to diverse faculty and wide expertise
as well as to the rich resources available in New York
City.
