Professor, Ph.D. Program in Sociology

Mary Clare Lennon has spent much of her career examining the relationship between gender, socioeconomic status, and health problems, and she will work with the multi-campus, interdisciplinary CUNY Urban Health Collaborative on several initiatives, including research studies of homelessness and the proposed doctoral program in public health. Lennon earned a B.A. in sociology from Fordham University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology, as well as an M.S. in biostatistics, from Columbia. She was formerly an associate professor in the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and director of social science research at Columbia’s National Center for Children in Poverty. Currently the associate editor of Women and Health, much of Lennon’s recent work has focused on the health and well-being of low-income women and children. The co-editor of Policy into Action: Implementation and Welfare Reform and editor of Women and Health: Work, Welfare and Well-Being, she also has contributed to several additional books that examine the mental health of low-income women. She has been a visiting scholar at The Russell Sage Foundation and a visiting research collaborator at Princeton University’s Office of Population Research and the Center for the Study of Child Wellbeing; and she has received significant grant funding from several organizations, including the National Institute of Mental Health, the William T. Grant Foundation, and the National Science Foundation.
