Richard Alba

Distinguished Professor, Ph.D. Program in Sociology

Alba Richard Alba, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, has published a series of books and articles that have had a profound influence on theoretical and empirical work in modern sociology. His areas of specialization are the sociology and demography of migration, race and ethnicity, and urban sociology. His research has an increasingly international focus. A current book project (with CUNY colleague Nancy Foner) involves a comparative investigation of the incorporation of immigrants and their children in North America and western Europe. Alba is considered one of the top demographers in the nation, as well as a theorist and conceptual innovator who has made major contributions to the understanding of ethnicity, assimilation, and segregation. He comes to the Graduate Center from SUNY at Albany, where he served as Director of the Center for Social and Demographic Analysis, and as Director of the Lewis Mumford Center for Comparative Urban and Regional Research. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
