Distinguished Professor, Ph.D. Program in Theatre, and Vera Mowry Roberts Chair in American Theatre

SavranDavid Savran, one of the country's leading theatre scholars, has long been a student of American theatre and culture. He earned a Ph.D. in theatre arts from Cornell, an M.F.A. in directing from Carnegie-Mellon, and has a background in directing theatre and opera. Prior to coming to The Graduate Center, he was professor of English, modern culture, and media; and theatre, speech, and dance at Brown. His seven books take a fresh look at New York experimental theatre and such American playwrights as Tony Kushner, Arthur Miller, Suzan-Lori Parks, Paula Vogel, and Tennessee Williams. He is the editor of the Journal of American Drama and Theatre, associate editor of Theatre Journal, and vice president of the American Society for Theatre Research. In recognition of his groundbreaking work in American theatre, he was selected to be on the judging committees for the Obie Awards honoring the 2003-04 and the 2004-05 seasons.
