Biochemistry: 2007 Student Honors, Awards, Publications, and Other Activities
Catherine Bangeranye (Biochemistry) has been awarded a 2007 United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowship. The award consists of a $42,000 fellowship stipend and a $10,000 research grant. Bangeranye’s studies focus on a family of proteins involved in the expression of genes found in mitochondria and that are essential for cellular energy metabolism; malfunction of these proteins causes a number of neurodegenerative disorders. She is conducting her research under the mentorship of Professor Serafín Piñol-Roma of the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education.
