Center for Human Environments
The Center for Human Environments (CHE) is a community research and technical assistance center which provides a bridge between tenants, children and communities and the non-profit/governmental sector that develops programs and policies affecting them, through research, technical assistance and participatory design projects. CHE brings together architects, psychologists, geographers, anthropologists, political scientists and urban planners whose research addresses the relationships between people and their physical settings. CHE often merges its research and participatory design skills with design and planning firms to help design environments more directly tied to the needs and experiences of those living or working in them.
The Center for Human Environments houses 4 interrelated research groups: Housing Environments Research Group, Childrens Environments Research Group, Public Space Research Group, and the Youth Studies Group.
Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies
The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS) is the first and only university-based research center in the United States dedicated to the study of historical, cultural, and political issues of vital concern to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered individuals. By sponsoring public programs and conferences, offering fellowships to individual scholars, and functioning as an indispensable conduit of information, CLAGS serves as a national center for the promotion of scholarship that fosters social change.
Center for Place, Culture and Politics
The Center for Place, Culture and Politics is an interdisciplinary center providing an exciting intellectual forum for the discussion of a wide range of vital contemporary issues. The center's name and focus express the fact that at the beginning of the twenty-first century, questions of space and place have come to play a crucial role in the public culture.
Center for Advanced Study in Education
The Center for Advanced Study in Education (CASE) was established to conduct basic and applied research concerned with improving and upgrading the quality of education in urban areas. CASE serves as a forum for consideration of policy issues, a center for interdisciplinary approaches to educational problems, and a clearinghouse in areas of educational research. Its activities are conducted either through the Director's office or through one of its component units: the Institute for Research and Development in Occupational Education, the National Self-Help Clearinghouse, the National Resource Center for Paraprofessionals, the Peer Research Laboratory, and the Workplace Technology Research Group. Many CASE projects are conducted in collaboration with the New York City Board of Education.
Center for Urban Research
Working with Graduate Center faculty and students, the Center for Urban Research organizes research on the critical issues that face New York and other large cities in the U.S. and abroad, collaborates with public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and other partners, and holds forums for the media, foundations, community organizations and others about urban research at the Graduate School and CUNY.
Center for the Study of Culture, Technology and Work
The Center for the Study of Culture, Technology and Work concerns itself both structurally and historically with issues relating to knowledge and the forms of knowledge, such as scientific method, emergent discourses, and interrelationships among high, mass, popular, and everyday cultures. The Center, which is interdisciplinary in orientation, fosters appropriate scholarly activities such as research projects and publications, seminars, and colloquia. Information and research expertise are provided to the scholarly community as well as to the community at large, with particular emphasis on the communities of New York City.
Center for the Study of Women & Society
Since 1977, The Center for the Study of Women and Society has promoted interdisciplinary feminist scholarship. The focus of the Center's research agenda is the study of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class and nation in relationship to the experiences of women and men in societies around the world. The Center co-sponsors with the Women's Studies Certificate Program intellectual exchange symposia and lectures--- among scholars within CUNY as well as with visiting scholars. The Center also seeks to collaborate with grassroots and professional organizations.
