- Philip Kasinitz Named Presidential Professor of Sociology
The Graduate Center has awarded the title of Presidential Professor to sociologist Philip Kasinitz, effective January 27, 2014. Kasinitz, who has a joint appointment with the GC and Hunter, has been on the doctoral faculty since 1993. He also serves as associate director of the Center for Urban Research at the GC.
Kasinitz was executive officer of the Ph.D. Program in Sociology from 2001 to 2011 and is currently interim EO. He specializes in the study of urban sociology, international migration, and race and ethnicity. His most recent book is The Urban Ethnography Reader, coedited with Mitchell Duneier and Alexandra K. Murphy (Oxford University Press, 2014).
A former president of the Eastern Sociological Society, Kasinitz has published widely in academic journals and in the Nation, Dissent, the Wall Street Journal, and Lingua Franca, and he edits the book review section of the journal Sociological Forum. Before coming to CUNY Kasinitz taught at Williams College, and he has held visiting positions at Princeton and the University of Amsterdam. He received his Ph.D. in sociology from New York University.
