Art History

    The Advanced Research Collaborative (ARC) is the focal point of the collaborative research activities of the Graduate Center. It promotes interdisciplinary research, partners with GC Research Centers, Institutes and Interdisciplinary Committees, connects the research activities of CUNY faculty at the Colleges to GC research programs and seminars, and provides a home for outstanding visiting scholars to collaborate with faculty and students. ARC offers support to GC doctoral students pursuing research as well as to postdoctoral students who have completed their initial projects.

Art History

Introduction

The Ph.D. Program in Art History is dedicated to the development of scholars, teachers, museum personnel, art critics, and other professionals. Students specialize in one area while gaining a full general background in the history of art. Arrangements have been made through the cooperation of various art institutions for students to avail themselves of New York City’s unparalleled opportunities for the study of art history through firsthand experience with art objects and monuments. The program’s Visual Resource Collection includes a rapidly growing digital database, containing more than a half-million images, that is online and searchable.

Specializations

The program offers courses from ancient through contemporary art and architecture, including photography, cinema, criticism and theory, as well as African, Islamic, Native American, Oceanic, and Pre-Columbian art and architecture. Students may register for courses offered by other CUNY graduate programs as well as by universities within the Interuniversity Doctoral Consortium (Bard, Columbia, Fordham, NYU, New School, Princeton, Rutgers, SUNY Stony Brook). Many students, in addition to their degree, complete certificate programs in American Studies, Film Studies, Interactive Technology and Pedagogy, Medieval Studies, Renaissance Studies, or Women’s Studies.
